Epiphany – Elopement – Casey & Brandon

The most exquisite elopements, in our opinion, find the right balance between gravitas and joy. The gravitas comes in when a couple and those they have entrusted to be a part of their day acknowledge (in small and significant ways) that their wedding is a singular moment in the couple’s lives – that they are intending, on a single day, at a single instant, to commit themselves to one another for the rest of their existence. As for the joy? Well, that has to be invited in – by welcoming unexpected moments, by being open to spontaneity and lightness.

Brandon and Casey, together with Elope Cape Town, made sure their day featured both, and strongly. We will speak to the gravitas in a little while, but for now, here’s a few moments that where it was clear they embrace fun:

  • Brandon and Casey opted to use popcorn confetti, and when it fell all around them, they both tried to catch some in their mouths (photographs as evidence!)

  • During their ceremony, Brandon and Casey shared some of the story of their first meeting, including how, all those years ago, Casey reluctantly agreed to go out to a second location but only after a lengthy negotiation in which she set a number of hard rules: a return home for an outfit change, a curfew and a chosen meal after the night out. They also joked about how Brandon (also known as Plandon back then) orchestrated the evening in such a way that he got uninterrupted time to talk to Casey.
  • At one point during the champagne celebrations, one of their loved ones had his camera out (a rather old one, we might add). He took a shot and then admired his work, commenting, “This is not a bad picture at all!”. Casey’s mom was there to correct him. “Don’t be daft – look at the subjects you’re working with. It’s not you and your camera – it’s THEM!’ (Point in case, below).

Our Creatives adore it when couples have very clear ideas about how they want to celebrate the beginning of their marriage. Casey and Brandon were (and are) such a couple. They wanted a celebration that not only honored their love but one that placed importance on each of their families. They achieved this in a number of ways (some of which we share below).

Just how important their families are to them became evident when, in the lead up to their elopement, Brandon and Casey asked whether they could trade some of the photography time traditionally dedicated to their couple shoot to a family shoot instead. We explained to them that they didn’t need to choose between the two – we could do both: Capture their nearest and dearest, and also capture the two of them in the golden light, at the beginning of their next great adventure together.

At Elope Cape Town, we encourage couples to make their elopements and ceremonies personal at every turn. Our usual team of exceptional Creatives came together to bring Brandon & Casey’s vision to life – all led by Lindi, Elope Cape Town’s planner extraordinaire and co-founder.

In Casey’s words, “Lindi was an absolute joy to work with. She listened carefully to our vision and helped us navigate everything involved in getting married in Cape Town. Her attention to detail and ability to source the most beautiful venue was simply outstanding. Throughout the entire planning process, she was always available to answer any questions we had and make sure that everything was in order for our big day – she REALLY took the pressure off of us“.

Before we get to the photographs (we know you want to see the photographs!), we wanted to share a particularly beautiful part of Brandon and Casey’s ceremony (here’s where that gravitas we mentioned earlier comes in, and then some).

“Epiphany”  by Lang Leav

Here are the words that have brought me to a new understanding. Here are the words that will bind us forever. From this day forward, I will speak your name with gratitude, knowing it is the mantra of my soul. I will let you go, knowing we are eternal. We were born to walk this world in intersecting lines. We are circles and signposts and parallels. I have left markers for you at every turn. Look for me in everything that catches your breath. Let the simple miracle of your own presence overwhelm you. For you are beautiful, in ways that can’t be described. And we are love at its most inexplicable. With these words, I am one with divinity. With these words, I am one with you.”
